frequently asked questions

Where are you located?

Alexandria, Virginia

Will you do on location sessions?

Yes. You can contact me for more information.

Do you shoot with natural light or studio lights (flash)?

Whenever possible I use natural light.  If additional light is required, diffused lighting is used to make it look natural.

Doesn’t studio lighting bother my newborn baby?

Not at all. My studio lights are diffused so that the light emitting from them is soft, exactly like natural daytime light. Newborns generally will be sleeping and posed in angles so that the light feathers them, not blinds them.

When should I schedule my session?

  • Maternity session between 32 – 36 weeks.
  • Newborn session before the expected due date.
  • Baby session at any time, though ideally when baby is 4 months old or older.
  • Family session at any time
  • Any session with small children, after nap time and bring snacks

How do we schedule a date for a newborn if we don’t know when the baby will be born?

Because babies rarely arrive on their due dates, it is best to book as far in advance so I can add your estimated due date to my calendar and secure availability. Pre-booking also allows you to prepare for the session ahead of time, such as planning your wardrobe, indicating which poses you would like me to include and communicating your overall vision for your session BEFORE your baby arrives.

When your baby arrives, please contact me as soon as possible so we can secure a date within two weeks of your baby’s birth. However, if you know your c-section or induction date, the session date can be booked in advance.

Why do newborn photos have to be taken in these first two weeks?

Newborns change dramatically in the first weeks of life. When they are first born, they are able to bend and curl up into these sweet little poses, mimicking how they lived inside the womb. All these amazing characteristics will begin to disappear after a few weeks.

What if my newborn is older than two weeks?

It’s not too late to get newborn photos—I shoot newborns up to three months old. However, know that the older the baby is, the less likely they will look or pose like a newborn. I will still get nice images from the photo session and that’s what is important!

If you decide against newborn portraits, the next “prime time” for a photo session is 5 – 8 months when your baby is able to support their head while on their tummy and/or sit up confidently. We can capture a greater variety of poses and cute baby expressions at this stage.

Why no clothes on the newborn?

Nothing is the best wardrobe for a newborn. Most outfits don’t fit newborns well and they often look swallowed in clothes.

What should I do if we are sick?

Sick and photo sessions do not mix well. I want you to love your images so please reschedule! One re-schedule is permitted per session and your deposit will transfer. Please be considerate and notify me of any changes to the date or time of the session no later than 48 hours prior to the session date.

How long will my session last?

Newborn sessions can take 3 to 4 hours to accommodate feeding, soothing, and diaper changes. Baby, maternity, family and senior sessions are 1 – 2 hours.

Do you do other photography besides family, maternity, and children?

At this time, I do not do other portrait photography. I specialize in maternity, children, senior and family photography. I do not photograph weddings, boudoir or on-location events (e.g. birthday parties, baptisms, etc.).

I do, however, sell and commission landscape photography art. You can find my website at

When will I see my images?

Your password protected gallery will be available within two to three weeks after our session.
